We get asked this question a lot, and unfortunately it's difficult to give a straight answer.  This is intended only for you to get a rough estimate of what you might expect to spend; we cannot guarantee that the number you come up with using this guide will exactly match the price you pay in store.

The Board Foot

In the world of lumber, boards are priced by volume, typically in units of board feet.  A board foot is equivalent to a one foot square that is one inch thick.

To determine how many board feet are in a particular piece, multiply thickness (in inches) x width (in inches) x length (in feet) and divide the result by 12.  For example, a 3/4" x 8" x 6.5' piece contains 3.25 board feet.

Typically, you are charged according to the dimensions of the piece before it is milled.  We estimate this by adding 0.25" to the thickness and 1" to the width.  So if you needed a 3/4" x 8" x 6.5' piece, you would calculate the board footage as if the piece were a 1" x 9" x  6.5"

Base Prices and Special Dimensions

Simply put, larger pieces are harder to come by than smaller ones.  For this reason, the cost per board foot for a given species will increase as the dimensions become more difficult to find.  The base price (see list below) applies for pieces less than 1" thick, 9" wide, and 11' long.  For pieces in or exceeding these dimensions, follow these general guidelines:

Thickness:

1" - add $1.00 to base price

1.25" - add $1.50

1.5" - add $2.25

1.75" - add $2.25

2" - add $3.25

2.25" - add $4.25

2.5" - add $4.75

2.75" - add $6.00

3" - add $6.50

3.25" - add $7.00

3.5" - add $7.50

3.75" - add $8.00

4" - add $9.00

Width:

9"- 10" - add $1.00

11" - 13"  - add $2.00

14" - 16" - add $4.75

17" - 20" - add $7.25

Exceeding 20" - call for quote

Length:

11' - 12.5' - add $1.50

13' - 16' - add $2.50

Board Foot base Price List

Example

Say you're looking for a 1" x 10" x 7' piece of red oak.  The board footage would then be:

(1.25" x 11" x 7') /12 = 8.02 board feet

The base price of red oak is $7.75, but adding $1.00 for the 1" thickness and $1.00 for the 10" width brings the board foot price to $9.75.

Without tax, you can then expect to pay 8.02 x $9.75 = $78.20 for this piece.  We again stress that we cannot guarantee the price you calculate will be the price you pay in store.
